The girl’s name was Kiara Natasya. She was a sweet girl with shoulder-length hair who was still in the fifth grade. One day, her mother introduced Kiara to a neighbor’s boy who had just moved into the house next to theirs. The boy’s name was Abel Pandawa.
From the beginning of their acquaintance, Kiara knew that Abel was too exceptional to simply be her friend. Abel possessed an almost perfect physique and seemed proficient in everything he did. Kiara herself had a congenital disability since childhood, requiring her to use a cane to walk.
Despite grappling with feelings of inferiority due to her disability, Kiara found solace in the compassionate nature of Abel, who seemed unconcerned by her physical limitations. In fact, he often likened Kiara to an angel wielding a magic wand.
Though they attended different schools, their friendship grew remarkably close. For Kiara, who had never had a friend before, Abel became her first true companion in life. They grew up together over the years, their bond deepening with time.
When they both entered the same high school, Kiara and Abel embarked on a new chapter of their lives. As Kiara had anticipated, Abel became popular within the school. He was a key player on the school’s basketball team and was well-liked for his playful demeanor and warmth.
Feeling self-conscious as a disabled girl, Kiara began to distance herself from Abel at school, only warming up to him when they were in the comfort of their own neighborhood.
Initially, Abel was puzzled by Kiara’s tendency to keep her distance. However, he gradually adjusted to Kiara’s behavior, treating her as though she were a stranger whenever they crossed paths at school or in shared areas such as the cafeteria and library.
Despite this, Kiara secretly ensured that Abel always had a special drink in his locker during basketball practices, knowing that he often forgot to bring one. She continued this routine without ever letting Abel know.
Abel invited Kiara to various events outside of school several times, but Kiara, feeling uncomfortable in Abel’s popular circles, politely declined each time. When a beautiful girl in Kiara’s class developed feelings for Abel and sought Kiara’s assistance as Abel’s neighbor, Kiara supported Abel’s pursuit of her. The girl eventually became Abel’s first girlfriend among many others.
Despite harboring deep feelings for her best friend, Kiara chose to keep her emotions hidden, determined to prioritize Abel’s happiness. Kiara loved Abel in secret, never daring to confess her true feelings for fear of jeopardizing their precious friendship. She lived in constant fear of losing her dearest and only friend.
They went their separate ways when they entered college, but they continued to meet frequently in their neighborhood. Abel would often confide in Kiara about anything, while Kiara would always offer her support and assistance to Abel in various ways.
One day, Abel’s exceptional talent led to him being invited to join a music band in their town. From then on, Abel’s life took a whole new direction, and he and his band successfully made a mark on the Indonesian music scene.
During that time, Kiara focused on her teacher education program. Eventually, she became a teacher at a nearby elementary school, while Abel rose to become a nationally acclaimed artist. Despite the growing distance between them, Kiara diligently kept up with news about Abel through the media and even collected newspaper clippings documenting his journey.
Their meetings became less frequent as Abel’s career took off, but whenever Abel returned to town, the two would reconnect. Abel would often tease Kiara with funny stories and jokes, occasionally asking if she had found herself a boyfriend just to tease her.
Naturally, Kiara would always brush off the question, claiming she had a secret boyfriend she wouldn’t reveal to Abel. In truth, Kiara felt embarrassed as, at her age, she had never been in a romantic relationship, while Abel, her closest confidant, was constantly in the public eye, switching partners frequently.
It wasn’t until several years later that Kiara finally entered into a romantic relationship. The man who captured her heart was another teacher at their school. They dated for a year before he proposed to Kiara.
As Kiara prepared for her mid-December wedding, she sent Abel an invitation, even though he had already moved to the capital city. Sadly, Abel couldn’t attend the celebration.
Shockingly, it was reported that Abel Pandawa had tragically died in a car accident just three days before Kiara’s wedding. This heartbreaking news cast a permanent shadow over Kiara’s life, leaving her perpetually saddened, especially as she never had the chance to express her love for Abel.
Tragically, Kiara succumbed to a serious illness just two years after Abel’s death, also in mid-December. Before her passing, she explicitly requested to be buried beside Abel, not far from their childhood home, sealing their connection even in the afterlife.
Abel looked at the girl in front of him with a smile. The girl introduced to him was named Kiara, and she was very shy. Kiara was a sweet girl who always used a cane, just like his beloved grandmother who had passed away before Abel moved to the city where Kiara lived.
Seeing Kiara’s disability, Abel remembered something interesting. He had once asked his grandmother why she always carried her cane wherever she went. At that time, his grandmother had jokingly told him that it was a magic cane that would always help Abel.
Because of this shared connection with the cane, Abel always considered Kiara special and enjoyed being friends with the kind-hearted girl. They were even always together as they grew up.
At some point, Abel realized that he had started to fall in love with Kiara. However, Abel often hesitated to express his feelings because Kiara always seemed to avoid talking about their relationship. He also felt deeply hurt when Kiara supported him in dating other girls in her class.
Often, Abel would see Kiara sneak into the basketball team’s locker room and leave a drink for him there. To protect Kiara’s dignity, Abel pretended not to know about it. However, he felt happy even because of this small gesture. Eventually, he always waited for Kiara’s presence at every basketball game and became very excited when he saw Kiara come to support him quietly.
A few years before his life changed drastically, Abel wrote a song about his feelings for Kiara. He then sent it to one of the famous radio stations in their city with a special message to his friend. However, Kiara apparently never heard Abel’s song. Instead, it was a local band that was looking for a vocalist for their group that heard Abel’s song – and then invited Abel to join them.
Since then, Abel’s career soared, and he became famous. However, Abel still always wanted to meet Kiara. Abel once tried to tell Kiara about his feelings honestly. Unfortunately, Abel ended up heartbroken when he heard Kiara say that she already had a boyfriend.
Although Abel had been in relationships with other women several times, his true love always remained for Kiara. Unable to bear his situation, Abel tried to find ways to express his feelings honestly to his friend. Unfortunately, when he had finally resolved to muster the courage, he received Kiara’s wedding invitation instead.
Abel’s heart shattered into pieces. For days, he drowned in overwhelming sadness until he decided that no matter what happened, he still had to first express his feelings to Kiara.
Three days before his friend’s wedding, Abel wore his best clothes, cut his hair, and prepared himself thoroughly. However, tragedy struck just 30 minutes after Abel left his apartment en route to the airport. He was involved in a fatal car accident, which claimed his life suddenly and unexpectedly.
Abel Pandawa passed away in mid-December, without anyone in the world knowing about the love and lifelong secret in his life, including the person he loved himself. The only remaining evidence of his feelings for Kiara Natasya was expressed in the lyrics of the first song he ever wrote – titled “A Thousand Years”.
Angel, my beloved angel
Just for a moment, let me touch your fingers
Let me reveal the secret that has broken my heart for so long
You don’t know, I stand in waiting for a thousand years
You are my calming medicine
You are laughter in my sorrow
You are the notes of my heart
You are my true friend
But you are not my lover
(Chorus)
What’s wrong with you?
What’s wrong with me?
Your defenses are so strong
And loving you feels forbidden to me
Sadly, I can’t easily let you go
I’m just a foolish man loving you silently
Angel, my beloved angel
The night is approaching, come near me
Long have I kept my heart and now I am frail
But a thousand years ahead,
I will still love you, even if my body melts away
(Back to chorus)
Angel, my beloved angel…
Tell me where I can hold you
If it means death
Then I will embrace death
